The Oscars’ fiasco was another private sector atrocity c/o PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Mark Rylance is the epitome of cool.
Nigel Farage has a place on Trump’s Insecurities Council.
I don’t think anyone needs anarchists.
Cartoon politicians like Farage and Trump are the pacifiers of the working man and woman.
Mr Trump is on a victory tour, first stop in my hometown of Cincinnati. It’s only a matter of time before he starts pinning military medals on his suit jacket.
Mr Trump’s election was a global 9/11. He could very well turn the US into a Verbrecherstaat.
In psychoanalytic terms, he’s a psychical infant.
Infantile psyche + Twitter = global clown show. This is the quality of entertainment the Deplorables crave.
There’s no way back to the economic and cultural insulation of the Shire. As Marx wrote long ago, the cheap commodities of the bourgeoisie have battered down all Chinese walls. Brexit and Trump walls will fare no better.
Mr Trump is a failed President even before taking office. He’ll have to answer to the pitchforks and patarini who elected him sooner than later.
His fate depends on what motivated the Deplorables. If they were motivated by the prospect of manufacturing jobs returning in mass numbers to the US, their belief will be shattered. However, if they were motivated by identity politics (i.e., misogyny, xenophobia, and racism), then their faith will be fully rewarded by Trump’s Presidency.
There are pockets of reason and enlightenment strewn over a landscape of inbred cultural backwardness. Radical cosmopolitans must stand up and say no to ignorance and cultural backwardness, whenever and wherever revanchist populism surfaces.
There are also historical precedents for the Trump-Farage-Le Pen-Petry phenomenon. Cola Di Rienzo, Savonarola, Luther, and Robespierre attempted to channel the anger of “the people” towards various political ends. They lost control (the Peasants’ War of 1524-25, which was crushed with Luther’s help) and lost their lives in the process (Savonarola, Cola, and Robespierre).
The Trump campaign circus is now the Trump transition team circus.
The Nigel Farage power play came to naught. He remains a right-wing carpetbagger sans portfolio.
The new antisemitism will be directed by the alt-right guru who will take up residence in the office of the White House chief of staff.
Rather than “draining the swamp,” Mr Trump is filling it with his own children and his childish twitter bile.
The (failed) materialist assumption is that people who flock to Farage, Le Pen, Trump, and the AfD are responding to economic conditions. In reality, they are simply politicizing the culture of hate that is part of their traditional way of life. What needs rethinking is the state of the cultural conflict between the forces of reason and enlightenment and the forces of petty revanchism and historical backwardness.
Ms Clinton says Mr Trump is mainstreaming hate.
Most of this nonsense is hatched in the foetid air of US conservative politics, and is spread miasmically by the hatestream media (H$M), Fox News, talk radio (especially its prince of darkness, Rush Limbaugh), militia confabs, and digital dungeons. The entire genre is traceable to the John Birch Society of the mid-20th century, which spread its tentacles throughout the right-wing milieu, ensnaring even “libertarian” politicians like Ron Paul. This “paranoid style” of politics, which is a political tradition in itself, was first identified by Richard Hofstadter in the midst of the McCarthy era. In Hofstadter’s view, groups on the fringes of US life, which faced diminished prospects, were the fertile ground of conspiracy thinking, scapegoating, fear, and hate.
On the other hand, much of the contemporary paranoid style is launched from the “center” of US social and political life (as pointed out by Michael Rogin). Hence, Trump’s “Birther” movement was incubated in mid-town Manhattan, not Lynch Haven, Alabama. The idea of Obamacare “death panels” was put into public circulation by Republican Vice-Presidential nominee and political Kardashian, Sarah Palin, not by Milo Yiannopoulos. Glenn Beck used several hours of his Fox News platform to map the massive influence of George Soros, “The Puppet Master.” Other Fox News presenters (Hannity, O’Reilly, etc.) reported on “Obama phones” and the nefarious activities of “ACORN” as evidence of “massive voter fraud,” which has never been confirmed by any rational investigation.
Trump, Farage, and Wilders are the “Three Tenors” of international right-wing extremism.
Brexit was a political gambit by Mr Cameron to head off a challenge from the right by UKip/Fearage in the parliamentary election last year. He had to reverse course in a last ditch effort to stave off a disaster that would be an entirely Tory manufactured own goal. Now he’s out of a job.
Plebiscitary democracy has an ignoble history. Brexit is the latest chapter in that history.
Plebiscites are notoriously poor vehicles for democratic decision making and one doesn’t even have to resort to Godwinian references to find examples:
California’s Proposition 13 (1978)
California’s Proposition 209 (1996)
California’s Proposition 8 (2008)
The lot of the working class would still be miserable post-Brexit. Then who would they blame?
The problem for the poor is that the elite wind up winning anyway, no matter what the outcome is/was.
A Truth and Reconciliation Tribunal might be necessary given the extreme propaganda of the Brexiteers.
Once Scotland and Northern Ireland leave, it will be Tiny England.
Brexit remorse has already overcome the leading Leavetariat.
Nicola Sturgeon is the big winner. The fact that she’ll parlay Brexit into a second Scottish referendum makes her the most savvy politician in the UK.
The silver lining for Labour is that Mr Corbyn’s incompetent performance makes him more cullable than ever.
The mob threatens to imprison Europe behind an iron curtain of ignorance and intolerance, pitchfork wielding folk headed by the likes of Hofer, Bachmann, Le Pen, Farage, etc.
It will end in Brexitears.
The noble squid is no weed.
Nothing says Prince like a duet of Mr Wonder and Ms Madonna.
