Royal we

“We” romanticize sanguineous relations (family), politicize legal relations (citizens), revolutionize labor relations (comrades). These percepts and concepts primarily create unity through division. The ways we characterize these various relations are, ultimately, arbitrary; what matters is the real or imaginary quality of the interactions that are represented, not how they are labeled.

However, the persistence of “family” is influenced to a significant degree by economic relations with the state (e.g., taxation and inheritance).
